Officers from the Meriden Police Department in New Haven County responded to Platt High School at approximately 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30, after a social media video went viral involving students in possession of what appeared to be a firearm.
According to police, the video, believed to have been filmed in the school on Tuesday morning, was posted on social media showing a student brandishing the "firearm", prompting district officials to place the high school into a lockdown.
Platt Assistant Principal Geoff Kenyon said that police formed a perimeter around the school, while investigators worked with school administrators and staff in an attempt to locate two suspects through internal video inside the building, school staff, and other means.
Police said that the investigation determined that the two teens were inside the building, but neither had reported to class.
Following “a methodical search of the building,” Kenyon said that the two teens were located in the auditorium along with another group of students.
A 16 and 15 year old were both taken into custody and will be charged with breach of peace, police said.
At the time the teens were apprehended, they were in possession a prop gun, which police said was the weapon in the video. Kenyon also noted that the other students who were inside the auditorium with the pair will also face internal consequences.
No injuries were reported, and students went back to learning before 11 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
